Curved, straight or bean-shaped: bacilli come in many variants and are widely spread.

Acinetobacter spp.
(bacteria incl. MDR)

The genus Acinetobacter comprises aerobic, nonmotile Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacteria. It belongs to the Moraxellaceae family. Currently, there are 32 known Acinetobacter subspecies.

Several species such as Acinetobacter baumannii have emerged as major nosocomial pathogen. This particular germ, for example, triggers catheter-associated urinary tract infection and pneumonia.

The increasing multi-resistance to antibiotics (MDR = multidrug resistance) hinders the treatment of infections caused by Acinetobacter species.

Transmission mainly occurs via contaminated water and food respectively.
