Curved, straight or bean-shaped: bacilli come in many variants and are widely spread.

Bartonella quintana

Bartonella quintana is a Gram-negative, facultative intracellular, rod-shaped bacterium of the Bartonellaceae family. The pathogen may cause the five-day fever (also trench fever or Wolhynia fever). Today, the bacterium plays a role for immunocompromised patients, in whom it has been proven to elicit bacillary angiomatosis (formation of tumours composed of blood or lymphatic vessels).

Bartonella quintana is primarily transmitted by body lice.
