Blastocystis hominis
(parasite)

Blastocystis hominis is a protozoan, strictly aerobic parasite, belonging to the group of Stramenopiles. Blastocystis hominis is found in the intestine of differing animal species.

An infection with Blastocystis hominis often produces no symptoms. Clinical symptoms may include acute and chronical diarrhoea, flatulence, abdominal cramps, and fatigue.

Transmission mainly occurs via contaminated water and food.

For a successful inactivation of parasites, specific disinfectants effective against parasites are required.
