Curved, straight or bean-shaped: bacilli come in many variants and are widely spread.

Campylobacter jejuni / coli
(bacterium)

The spiral-shaped, microaerophilic, Gram-negative Campylobacter jejuni bacterium with flagella belongs to the family of Campylobacteriaceae.

It is one of the most frequent pathogens of gastroenteritis. The bacterium leads to feverish enterocolitis (inflammation of the intestine) and may cause the reactive Guillain-Barré syndrome (inflammatory disorder affecting the peripheral nervous system).

In Germany, Campylobacter jejuni is not as highly resistant to fluoroquinolones as in countries such as Spain or Thailand.

The main transmission path is direct or indirect contact with contaminated persons or objects.
