Leishmania spp.
(parasite)
Leishmania spp. is a genus of flagellated protozoal (single-celled), obligate intracellular parasites. Leishmania belongs to the family of Trypanosomatidae. They elicit leishmaniasis, which is divided into cutaneous (also oriental boil), mucocutaneous (also espundia) and visceral (also black fever) leishmaniasis. Leishmania spp. are primarily transmitted by sand-flies.
Parasites cannot be killed by disinfectants.
