Pneumocystis jiroveci
(fungus)

Pneumocystis jiroveci (also Pneumocystis carinii) is a sac fungus in the Pneumocystidaceae family. It is the causative organism of Pneumocystis pneumonia. AIDS, lymphoma, CML patients and patients undergoing immunosuppressive therapy are at particular risk. Nosocomial transmission may occur.

Resistance to trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole has been reported.

Transmission mainly occurs via droplets or particles in the air.
