Rickettsia prowazekii is a Gram-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped bacterium. It belongs to the family of Rickettsiaceae. The bacterium is the causative organism or epidemic typhus, characterised by high fever and rash.

Rickettsia prowazekii is primarily transmitted by body lice.
