Rotavirus is a genus of viruses in the family Reoviridae. The virus consists of two icosahedral capsids (shaped like spheres) and is nonenveloped.
Rotavirus is the most common cause of gastroenteritis in infants, but also affects adults.
Very often it is responsible for outbreaks of nosocomial infections in neonatal units in hospitals.
The main transmission path is direct or indirect contact with contaminated persons or objects.
