Salmonella spp. comprises facultative anaerobic, Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacteria of the Enterobacteriaceae family. With respect to the pathogenesis, Salmonella spp. are divided into typhoid and enteritic salmonellosis. Both elicit gastroenteritis; but the courses of disease are different.
The main transmission path is direct or indirect contact with contaminated persons or objects.
