Streptococcus pneumoniae

Streptococcus pneumoniae is an aerobic, Gram-positive bacterium. It has the shape of oval to lancet-shaped cocci, appearing in pairs or short chains. Streptococcus pneumoniae belongs to the Streptococcaceae family.

It frequently causes pneumonia and bronchial pneumonia, and also may lead to meningitis or sepsis. In recent years, its resistances have increased, particularly to penicillins and macrolides. Resistances tend to be particularly high in southern European countries.

Transmission mainly occurs via droplets or particles in the air.
