Usutu virus
(enveloped virus)

The Usutu virus is an enveloped virus in the Flaviviridae family.

The virus harms wild birds. Particularly susceptible species are blackbirds, owls and screech owls – other bird species usually do not fall ill. Human infections are extremely rare. In humans, the clinical symptoms include fever, headache, skin rash, and encephalitis.

Transmission to birds mainly occurs via vectors (ornithophilous blood-sucking insects, e.g. Culex mosquitoes).
