West Nile virus is an enveloped, single-stranded RNA virus in the Flaviviridae family.

It causes the West Nile fever. Patients with immunodepression, tumours and elderly people may develop a severe clinical picture. Neurological complications include meningitis, encephalitis, or meningoencephalitis.

West Nile virus is primarily transmitted by mosquitoes.
